p38 MAPK14 is a polypeptide consisting of two lobes - small and large, connected together through a backbone, not involved in catalytic activity of this protein.

Small lobe, where majority of β strands are located, is involved in ATP-binding.

Large lobe, rich in α helices, has a peptide binding function.

Between the lobes, there is a binding site, where TXY motif is located (pictured in green). Moreover, residues in this site are usually found to be involved in binding of particular proteins. These residues binding activity is not conserved across this family of protein, however, some of the commonly found, are presented in the 'p38 MAPK in complex with inhibitors' subsection.
